This crippled variant of Family Key Logger is small and simple, but stealth is not its strong point. As in its more robust sister program, keystrokes are recorded in a TXT file, a format that proves difficult to analyze. Filtering options might make it easier, but there are none to be found. To its credit, the program doesn't slow system performance. If cloak-and-dagger operations are a top priority, this program is probably not your best bet. You can hide Home Keylogger's system tray icon manually, but the program will inevitably be revealed through common activities such as spyware scans, process management (through Task Manager or Process Explorer), and even a plain old system reboot. Once found, the program turns out not to be password protected, and settings can be changed by anyone who can guess the default (and unchangeable) key combination. Straightforward but absolutely disclosed and unprotected, Home Keylogger can only be recommended for spying on inexperienced users--a demographic that, these days, may only include your toddlers.

Ardamax Keylogger is a small, easy-to-use keylogger that captures user activity and saves it to a logfile. The logfile can be viewed as a text or web page. This snooping program offers most of the essential features, but its troublesome uninstallation process leaves a bad taste in our mouths. Like any good spy application, Activity Keylogger records keystrokes and takes screenshots at user-specified intervals. In addition, the app monitors all visited Web sites and programs used. Parents will appreciate the ability to block objectionable sites with a blacklist, to log conversation from a couple of popular IM clients, and to receive reports via e-mail or FTP. Activity Keylogger can be password-protected and configured so it can't be stopped by using the Task Manager. However, we encountered a fairly serious problem when testing the program's security. When we tried to uninstall the program from the Start menu, the app didn't prompt us for our password, leading us to believe we successfully removed it. However, when we then called it out of hiding with the proper hot-key combination, Activity Keylogger still worked just fine. To uninstall the app for good, we had to shut it down, then delete its Program Files Folder. That unfortunate issue helps drag an otherwise capable program down a few notches.
